Modest Mouse - Blame it on the Tetons chords & lyrics

Just posted my second Modest Mouse song! It was last September that I worked out and posted the anthemic "Good Times are killing me". I had meant to take more time to listen to their stuff, particularly with Johnny Marr as the guitar player on their later stuff.

"Blame it on the Tetons" is also from the "Good news for people who love bad news" album. Early learners shouldn't be put off by the first chord - Dadd11 - it's really just a D major chord with the 3rd string left open, and the 6th string muted ( usually with your thumb ).

Other than that the chords are playable enough - G, C, D, Cmaj7, and Am. There is a little riff on the C chord which just involves removing and adding the index finger ( kinda slow 'hammer-off', 'hammer-on' ). I could have expressed this as C-Cmaj7-C-Cmaj7, but I've just used C*, with an explanation of the riff at the start of the transcription.

You can check out my version of "Blame it on the Tetons" at the link below:

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots#1

23rd July 06:

Added the wonderful and quirky "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots #1", by Oklahoma psychedelic alternative Rock Band, The Flaming Lips. Very playable, but interesting sequence of guitar chords, and even without the 'interesting noises' on the original, sounds pretty cool just played on an acoustic or electric guitar. Click on the link below to check it out:

Also just added chords and lyrics for Bob Dylan's song "Dirge", from the much underrated "Planet Waves" album - can't believe I didn't already have this one, I've played it often enough! Check out the link below:

Wilco "Summer Teeth" guitar chords and lyrics

Looking forward immensely to hearing the new Wilco album ( imaginatively titled "Wilco, the album"...!), their first since 'Sky Blue Sky', and by all accounts a class collection of songs.

Meantime, I'm listening to my back catalogue, and have picked "Summerteeth" from the 1999 album of the same name, to work out chords and lyrics, and add to my site.

A bit tricky for the early learner, as it's in the key of E, with the main chords being E, C#m, F# and A. Here I would often suggest transposing to an easier key, say C major, where these chords would become C, Am, D and F - but... the final part of the song switches to the key of G major, so the transposition would bring this part to Eb major - even more difficult chords to manage.

If you really like the song, it's worth while going to the effort of learning and practicing the chords you're not too familiar with - this is something I would always advocate for early learners - it's a carrot & stick approach to making sure you continue to improve!

You can find my chords and lyrics interpretation of "Summer Teeth" on my Wilco page (below):

Rod Stewart - In a Broken Dream ( Python Lee Jackson )

Every now and again I hear a song on the radio that I used to play years ago, but haven't played in a long time. So I get my guitar out, and, as I've usually forgotten some if not all of the lyrics ( chords too! ), I go to the artist page on my site, or use the search option at the top of each page, find the song - sorted! Sometimes I will add it to my current repertoire (abbatoir??!) of songs, sometimes it won't get played again for a while.

And sometimes I discover that I never actually got around to posting the song, even though when I first created my chords and lyrics site, I thought I had transcribed every song from every notebook, scrap of paper etc.

But... it's all good, as well as revisiting the song myself, I get a chance to feature it on my site, on the artist page and on the updates(new songs) page. For some it will be a treasure, as many of these songs can't be found elsewhere, for others a chance to listen to and learn a really good 'blast from the past'.

In this instance the song is "In a Broken Dream" by Python Lee Jackson. "Python who?" I hear you ask. Well, if you run a Wikipedia search for the band you'll find out that they were a 60's Australian band, and a whole lot more, but from my perspective, when I was a big Rod Stewart and the Faces fan, this song, on which he guested as singer, was re-released somewhere between The Faces "Stay with Me" and Rod's solo classic "Maggie May", and was probably the most played jukebox song of my youth.

It's a classic rock/blues song, and Rod's vocals fit like a glove.

I've made good my omission, and added the song to my Rod Stewart guitar chords and lyrics page, at the link below:

Leonard Cohen - Democracy chords & lyrics

I wasn't fortunate enough to catch Leonard Cohen on his recent European tour, but watched a one hour extract on BBC TV from the London performance. At 74 years of age, he has lost nothing of his stage presence, and still has the voice of a Holy Man. Considering he has over 40 years of back-catalogue to choose from, I thought the song selections were spot-on, from Suzanne thru the best songs from "Various Positions" and "I'm Your Man" to his more recent works.

I was already conscious that I hadn't added to my own collections of Cohen chords and lyrics for some time, so I've worked out the chords to "Democracy" from the 1992 "The Future" album, and posted them to my Leonard Cohen songs page, at the link below:

Moeraes Fate ( was Dame ) - Listen and vote for the future of rock!

Ok, I have a small favour to ask. It will take a few minutes of your time, but I think it will be an enjoyable experience. It involves listening to a great new band called Moeraes Fate ( formerly Dame ). NOTE 29 Sept 09 - Dame have been re-invented as Moraes Fate, are about to release a new EP, and you can follow their fortunes at Moeraes Fate on Facebook

Because of my song chords website, I've been involved in pretty much all of the social media sites for several years now. Needless to say, most of my Myspace and Facebook 'friends' are bands and artists - 'birds of a feather' and all that. Which is great, because I get to listen to new bands and keep my finger on the pulse of new music.

Back in November 2007 I created a blog post here extolling the virtues of Dame ( now Moeraes Fate ) - a band from the Toronto area, who are still the best new band I've heard on any of the music community websites I subscribe to. Moeraes Fate ( formerly Dame ) are a trio of young ladies who belt out some of the best rock sounds I've heard in years. Which is astonishing when you realise that none of them are over 18. They have won numerous competitions for bands in the Toronto, Canada area, and are my tip to join artists like Colbie Caillat and The Fleet Foxes ( both of whom I had previously supported and promoted ) in the transition from MySpace to the recording studio and international recognition.

What I would ask of you is to visit the voting site on YouDiscover and vote for Moeraes Fate ( formerly Dame ). You'll find two of their live videos, and two songs on audio here, but I would suggest that you also visit the Moeraes Fate ( formerly Dame ) MySpace page to get the bigger picture - some of their earlier songs, Cyclops, Intervention and Hey Angel show off their lead singer Katee's bass guitar skills, as well as her kickass vocals, alternately sweetly seductive and in-your-face goddamn scary! This is a live acoustic version of one of their new songs "Making of the new me":

Add this to Ali's aggressive-blues licks, and Kayla's mission to beat the crap outta that drumkit ( in the best possible way! ) and you have a rock band which I'm convinced will punch their way to the mainstream, and really soon.

I know you will have received requests to listen to dozens of new bands, but please visit YouDiscover , listen, enjoy and VOTE FOR DAME! You know it makes sense - don't make me tell you in a few months that "I told you so...!"

Thanks for your attention, I'll be posting more song chords and lyrics really soon!

Enjoy your music,

PJ

Bob Dylan - I feel a change comin' on chords & lyrics

Although I've been a huge Dylan fan for many years, I must admit that I haven't given much attention to his later works.

But his latest album - Together Through Life is very listenable, very likeable. Ok, lyrically I guess I'll have to accept that we won't be getting the gorgeously intricate and metaphoric lyrics of past days, but he still manages to get some wry observations on life ( "Dreams never did work for me anyway, even when they did come true" ... )

I've worked out the chords and lyrics for "I feel a change comin' on", and posted them to my Dylan chords and lyrics page at the link below:

Paolo Nutini - "Candy" guitar chords and lyrics

I had previously posted just one Paolo Nutini song - "New Shoes" from the "These Streets" album, have now worked out and posted the new single, Candy.

It's a very simple song to play, with just 4 chords - A, Em, G, D7 comprising the verses and chorus, and with a C chord thrown in for the outro chord sequence.

My interpretation of the song chords and lyrics for "Candy" is on my Pop Songs page at the link below:

B'ehl - I'm sorry for being such a Crappy Friend

There are so many idiosyncrasies around this song, it's hard to know where to start!

It's a first, in that I've never posted a B'ehl song before. Actually, if I'm completely honest, I'd never heard of B'ehl before.

It definitely wins the prize for best song title on this blog....

And, while it's quite an easy song to play, and didn't take terribly long to work out, it definitely gets the #1 spot for 'longest time spent researching the background for a song on this blog'.

When I heard this song first, as so often these days on one of my daughters' MP3 players, I thought it was by The Sundays - the vocals sounded just like Harriet Wheeler at her best. But the title on the MP3 said "Bright Eyes - I'm sorry for being such a crappy friend", so I was all set to post it as a Bright Eyes song ( I had already posted their "First day of my life" to my Rock Song Chords page ).

But... it didn't sound like anything I'd heard from Bright Eyes, so I started my Google journey for the truth behind the song.

A search for the song name gave confusing results, suggesting it was... Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley, Commander Venus (Bright Eyes precursor), and, finally B'ehl. When I clicked on the first few results, the name B'ehl seemed to be a common link, so I tried to find them on Wikipedia. For the first time ever, I came up with a blank. Then I just searched CDUniverse for B'ehl, and discovered a 2003 album of theirs titled.... "Bright Eyes"! End of confusion!.

Apologies for the ramble, but I've been working out guitar chords and lyrics for songs for over ten years now, and this was certainly the most troublesome. But well worth it, I really love the song, and I've posted my version of the chords and lyrics to my Pop Guitar Songs page, at the link below:

Guitar Chords and Lyrics to "I'm Sorry for being such a Crappy Friend" by B'ehl.

If the video doesn't load below, click here to watch it on YouTube

I couldn't find an official B'ehl website, best I could do was this page at Last.fm, but their music can be browsed or bought online at the link below:
